About this event: Youth for Change Open forum-Youth Brainstorm Session- FIKR7 conference

G. B. Shaw's Quotes

Some of these qutes (Feorge Bernard Shaw's) are so simple and true, that i must post them for all of those who love his work. For those who don't know him-in short: he's an irish playwright, who got a Nobel prize for literature and an oscar. His most known work is Pygmalion (also a film).
The first two qutes are one of my favourites.

1. The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

2. There is only one religion, though there are a hundred versions of it.
o Plays Pleasant and Unpleasant, Vol. II, preface (1898)

3. The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them: that's the essence of inhumanity.
o The Devil's Disciple, Act II (1901)

4. There are no secrets better kept than the secrets everybody guesses.
o Crofts, Act III

5. It is more dangerous to be a great prophet or poet than to promote twenty companies for swindling simple folk out of their savings.
o Preface from Misalliance

6. Do not try to live for ever. You will not succeed.
o Preface from the Doctor's Dilemma

7. What is life but a series of inspired follies? The difficulty is to find them to do. Never lose a chance: it doesn't come every day.
o Act II from Pygmalion

8. Independence? That's middle-class blasphemy. We are all dependent on one another, every soul of us on earth.
o Act V from Pygmalion

9. The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. The happiness of credulity is a cheap and dangerous quality.

10. Life is not meant to be easy, my child but take courage: it can be delightful.

11. You use a glass mirror to see your face: you use works of art to see your soul.

12. If you have an apple and I have an apple, and we exchange apples, we both still only have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea, and we exchange ideas, we each now have two ideas.

P.S. If you want to know from which book any of this qutes is, just ask (i didn't write for them all).

Nigeria Rising Hope!

Celebrating the heart of Africa,
I danced naked at the stadium
With the knowledge that I would never appreciate
Lots of love for my heritage.

I understood the popular songs
That children sang in the days
When women witnessed the taboos-
What men refused to witness in cold.

I glanced through the papers and saw,
I heard my peculiar nature was alive.
We heard many tales from Shakespeare,
Even the Macks of our time spoke.

In one day we were transformed
Into something serious.
One day, we turned the tables
And we found hate that troubled us.

Today, we cry and we hope
For tomorrow in the womb of the godless.
As mercy and necessity came calling
Nigeria arrived in the mercy of mercies

Awaken, world of plants and people.
It was unfortunate the business that occurred.
Yet the future still holds hope.
We survived because we lived.

Unity lived with hope;
Prosperity laughed at the stadium;
Education retreated within those realms;
A partnership was built that lasted.

Silver Bay Leadership Forum Award

I am honoured to share a reflection on my experience at the 2008 Silver Bay Leadership Forum in Silver Bay, New York where they are celebrating their 90th Anniversary of a conference that explores the current and emerging state of leadership.

IMG_0469 Last night I was one of three recipients of the Inaugural Leadership Forum Awards. As stated in the program “each of this year’s honoured recipients has been selected for his/her demonstrated ability to take bold action, provide solutions to complex leadership dilemmas, and generate tremendous followership. These leaders have also exhibited the rare ability to cross streams and address issues through commercial, governmental, social and economic channels”. We were recognized for our work in solving ‘wicked’ problems and as you might imagine, it was a very humbling and uplifting experience for me.

In accepting the award, we were each asked to make a few remarks and share our perspectives on leadership. I kicked off my comments on how leadership emerges based on your state of mind. I asked the room two questions. The first – ‘how many of you believe that every problem has a solution’? A collection of people put up their hands. I then asked ‘how many of you believe that NOT every problem has a solution’. An even larger group of people raised their hands. I then went on to share a visual diagram that came to mind while travelling to Silver Bay and reflecting on my perspective of leadership. IMG_0493

In the past, my perspective on leadership was somewhat simplistic and singular. Today, I see leadership in the context of trying to solve some of the world’s most complex and interconnected challenges. It is a moving and evolving target that requires constant re-alignment and mobility. In response to my questions that I posed to the room, I shared my realization that problems are interconnected – and YES – there are solutions, though we often need to invent and co-create them.

While preparing for my remarks on leadership on the plane, in addition to my diagram, I also prepared a series of reflections on what I have learned about leadership over the years:

For me, leadership has been about...

- Being aware of problems and taking an active role in being part of creating solutions
- Being called upon to reflect and represent collective and shared experiences
- Asking critical questions in order to better understand realties
- Energizing processes through taking interest, showing appreciation and participating
- Making connections between diverging ideas and different people with diverse backgrounds
- Reflecting on lessons of the past and making decisions that move towards a brighter future
- Having perspective with the ability to both focus in on a situation as well as see a bigger picture
- Taking responsibility for my actions and intentions
- Believing in ideas and possibilities
- Convening conversations across differences and differences
- Resolving conflict through deep listening, understanding and building trust
- Transforming ideas into actions and new realities
- Dancing with life and celebrating beauty in the midst of it all

While at Silver Bay, in addition to connecting with official conference delegates from various corporations and non-profit organizations, I also enjoyed spending time with the children of the delegates. They were truly delightful and took great interest in TakingITGlobal and my experiences with leadership. I enjoyed responding to their questions and learning from their own experiences. A highlight was also being able to go Kayaking & make a necklace at the Craft Shop!

Blink - Blink

Blink: Blink
LOOP
Records

The latest offering from London’s infamous LOOP Collective, this eponymous debut features an unconventional bass-less trio of pianist Alcyona Mick, Robin Fincker on tenor sax and clarinet and drummer Paul Clarvis. All demonstrate considerable capabilities in the field of loose, open jazz which is experimental yet accessible.

Mick’s command of the low registers and occasionally percussive propulsion compensates for the lack of bassist, providing part of a stimulating backdrop for Fincker’s lean, airy tones to trace a weaving path. As if liberated, Clarvis shines in his use of textural variations away from the idea of a steady pulse.

This is ‘free’ jazz, but not in the extreme. Compositional similarities can be made to the likes of Polar Bear, The Blessing and Led Bib – a clear element of free-form collective improvisation is offset by a reticent yet unpredictable sense of control and direction. The balance has been finely cultivated, with track length maintained at a modest five-minute average: none of the solos are over-indulgent or tiring.

Save the planet
About this category: Environment & Urbanization

I'm posting here a link of funny and splendidly made commercials to aware ppl of our planet-to make it save!

Every day we do things to pollute our planet, why not start doing sth good for it-we're going to live on it for quite some while, so throwing a garbage in a bin, reducing electricity and water consumption, driving a bicycle or walk, using renewable resources, recycling, using energy-saving light bulbs isn't that hard, is it? Think about it!

________________________________________________
In Slovene (a bit larger text):

Kenny Garrett - Ronnie Scott's, 2/7/08

Hackneyed cliché it may be, but Kenny Garrett really has done it all. Work with names such as Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock provides a mere glimpse of his glittering CV, augmented by recording dates for labels including Atlantic, Warner and Nonesuch.

At Ronnie’s he was joined by Lennie Stalworth on bass, Jeff Motley on organ and impressive young drummer Justin Brown. The opening number was reminiscent of Davis’s late fusion group, in which Garrett prominently featured, and he opted to play his alto through a variety of electronic effects. Its fluid, shimmering tone was cheapened to the level of poor quality synth sax and struggled for penetration above the bustling band.

This alarming trait continued, with Garrett often abandoning his horn to join Motley on a second keyboard. Not a wise move. Indeed, it was Brown on drums who threw up the most surprises; his energetic, imaginative cross-rhythmic ideas saved many tunes from turning into drearily predictable elevator music.

Garrett’s apparent preference for cheesy smooth jazz in the vein of near-namesake jazz pariah Kenny G will leave purists foaming at the mouth. A final grandstand version of ‘Happy People’ served as the perfect example: with its gospelesque organ vamps and cringingly catchy sing-along sax melody, accompanied by animated calls from Garrett to bring the crowd to its feet for repeated choruses, it represented an undeniable trend of “selling out” to popular appeal.

The performance’s jazz merit was questionable – especially in relation to Garrett’s established post-bop credentials. However, if judged only against itself, it cannot fail to satisfy. The skull-capped saxophonist’s open defiance of “Quiet Please” jazz club decorum demands respect. How often does a full house at Ronnie Scott’s rise as one to sing, dance and applaud? Traditionalists will always take issue, but lovers of enjoyable good-time music have a powerful counterargument.

Mermaid stories

Here is one of my favourite stories of mermaids. I'll put in three different versions of it. Which one you like best, decide for yourself. Enjoy reading!
______________________________________________________________________________
1. The Crofter and the Seal-Woman
There once was a young crofter (a scottish farmer),
who owned a little patch of land on the coast. One
day while walking by the beach, he saw a group of
beautiful women dancing in the sunset, he saw a
pile of seal skins beside them and knew they were
selkies. As the sun went down they put on their
skins and slid back into the water, but as the last
selkie reached for her skin, the crofter jumped out
and seized the skin from her. She begged him for
it, but he wouldn’t give it to her and in the end she agreed to be his wife.
She was a good wife and gave him 7
beautiful children, but she yearned to
return to the sea. One day her
youngest child showed her a box he
had found in the barn, in it was her
seal skin. When the crofter returned
from the fields, his wife was gone,
back to the sea.

______________________________________________________________________________
2. The Mermaid Wife (Shetland Islands)

A story is told of an inhabitant of Unst, who, in walking on the sandy margin of a voe, saw a number of mermen and mermaids dancing by moonlight, and several sealskins strewed beside them on the ground. At his approach they immediately fled to secure their garbs, and, taking upon themselves the form of seals, plunged immediately into the sea. But as the Shetlander perceived that one skin lay close to his feet, he snatched it up, bore it swiftly away, and placed it in concealment.

On returning to the shore he met the fairest damsel that was ever gazed upon by mortal eyes, lamenting the robbery, by which she had become an exile from her submarine friends, and a tenant of the upper world. Vainly she implored the restitution of her property. The man had drunk deeply of love, and was inexorable; but he offered her protection beneath his roof as his betrothed spouse. The merlady, perceiving that she must become an inhabitant of the earth, found that she could not do better than accept of the offer.

This strange attachment subsisted for many years, and the couple had several children. The Shetlander's love for his merwife was unbounded, but his affection was coldly returned. The lady would often steal alone to the desert strand, and, on a signal being given, a large seal would make his appearance, with whom she would hold, in an unknown tongue, an anxious conference.

Years had thus glided away, when it happened that one of the children, in the course of his play, found concealed beneath a stack of corn a seal's skin; and, delighted with the prize, he ran with it to his mother. Her eyes glistened with rapture -- she gazed upon it as her own -- as the means by which she could pass through the ocean that led to her native home. She burst forth into an ecstasy of joy, which was only moderated when she beheld her children, whom she was now about to leave; and, after hastily embracing them, she fled with all speed towards the seaside.

The husband immediately returned, learned the discovery that had taken place, ran to overtake his wife, but only arrived in time to see her transformation of shape completed -- to see her, in the form of a seal, bound from the ledge of a rock into the sea. The large animal of the same kind with whom she had held a secret converse soon appeared, and evidently congratulated her, in the most tender manner, on her escape. But before she dived to unknown depths, she cast a parting glance at the wretched Shetlander, whose despairing looks excited in her breast a few transient feelings of commiseration.

"Farewell!" said she to him "and may all good attend you. I loved you very well when I resided upon earth, but I always loved my first husband much better."

_______________________________________________________________________________
3. The Silkie Wife (Shetland and Orkney Islands)

Those in the Shetland and Orkney Islands who know no better, are persuaded that the seals, or silkies, as they call them, can doff their coverings at times, and disport themselves as men and women.

A fisher once turning a ridge of rock, discovered a beautiful bit of green turf adjoining the shingle, sheltered by rocks on the landward side, and over this turf and shingle two beautiful women chasing each other. Just at the man's feet lay two sealskins, one of which he took up to examine it. The women, catching sight of him, screamed out, and ran to get possession of the skins. One seized the article on the ground, donned it in a thrice, and plunged into the sea; the other wrung her hands, cried, and begged the fisher to restore her property; but he wanted a wife, and would not throw away the chance. He wooed her so earnestly and lovingly, that she put on some woman's clothing which he brought her from his cottage, followed him home, and became his wife.

Some years later, when their home was enlivened by the presence of two children, the husband, awakening one night, heard voices in conversation from the kitchen. Stealing softly to the room door, he heard his wife talking in a low tone with someone outside the window. The interview was just at an end, and he had only time to ensconce himself in bed, when his wife was stealing across the room. He was greatly disturbed, but determined to do or say nothing till he should acquire further knowledge.

Next evening, as he was returning home by the strand, he spied a male and female phoca sprawling on a rock a few yards out at sea.

The rougher animal, raising himself on his tail and fins, thus addressed the astonished man in the dialect spoken in these islands, "You deprived me of her whom I was to make my companion; and it was only yesternight that I discovered her outer garment, the loss of which obliged her to be your wife. I bear no malice, as you were kind to her in your own fashion; besides, my heart is too full of joy to hold any malice. Look on your wife for the last time."

The other seal glanced at him with all the shyness and sorrow she could force into her now uncouth features; but when the bereaved husband rushed toward the rock to secure his lost treasure, she and her companion were in the water on the other side of it in a moment, and the poor fisherman was obliged to return sadly to his motherless children and desolate home.

Seriousness

When you grow up you tend to be serious-your taste for humour changes a little, you start forgetting how is to be a child and all the "grown up symptoms" come out.

When i was 9 years old i thought to myself how ridiculous grown ups are and that i'll never forget how is it to be a child. Yesterday this promice of mine came alive again.
We had a meeting during which we had to discuss things, make plans for children in our scouts group-where are we going, what are we going to do etc. At the end we had to talk things over but then, suddenly, we all felt that it's growing dull and we wanted to do sth else instead. The pillows on the couches were inviting us that we should grab them, and then ... a pillow fight started!
Ahhh-and then i remembered that i was growing to serious during all the exams we had in our university this year and that this kind of moments do me good, so ... To all of those who won't admit a child in you-you're always going to have a child in yourself-don't try to kill it, it'll make you feel younger (not that i'm old, but we forget that feeling sometimes too quick).

So, in the memory of the child in us-let him/her live in you 4ever. Being serious can kill your spirits-so have fun and do fun stuff! ;)

Innocent little gadgets
About this category: Technology & Innovation

When you see a video like that you must ask yourself where does our world go to and what else can this "innocent" things like mobile phones do to us. Now ask yourself how much can this gadget harm us and all the others (especially children) who wear them in a pocket of our trousers ...

Then there comes out the next question-is the technology really good for us? Count together the pro's and the contra's-so, what do we do now? If you're too shy to speak up about this here then you can click on the poll bellow the video.
